Cabin Beds:
Guide to Log Cabin Beds
Cabin beds are generally designed as platform beds with built-in dressers underneath the frame. Often referred to as captains beds, the cabin bed is a unique, versatile and highly functional bed design.
Cabin beds are known for their ability to save space by providing built-in drawers and storage compartments, often eliminating the need for a separate dresser or chest-of-drawers.
The term, 'cabin bed' is often used interchangeably with 'captains bed', but
actually got its name back in the days of log cabins when the bed design was extremely versatile by providing not only a comfortable sleep space, but also valuable storage space.
It was the addition of storage drawers underneath, much like the earlier nautical captains bed with drawers, that actually caused the two beds to be referred to as the same piece of bedroom furniture.
Cabin Bed Features
A cabin bed is a platform bed, meaning there is no need for a box spring, only a mattress. These beds are found in all sizes from twin to king. Large size bed frames, such as full, queen and king, generally sit at least two
feet off the ground.
The lower portion of the bed contains a single layer of storage space and drawers. Twin-sized units may be as
high as four feet from the ground and include a ladder for easier access.
- Cabin beds for children - Cabin beds for children may be built out of sturdy plastic and may be themed. Popular child-themed beds include pink and purple castles for girls and pirate ship beds for boys. Kids captain beds often employ a ladder of some type.
- Cabin beds for adults - Cabin beds for adults are generally built of quality wood. Oak is a popular choice for adult designs, which may include the addition of a bookcase-style headboard added to provide even more storage space.
Benefits and Disadvantages
The most common advantage to this bed design is the extra storage areas built right into the bed frame. Built-in drawers or additional baskets are easy to use and are roomy enough for storing a multitude of personal items. By eliminating the need for a dresser, cabin beds work well in small bedrooms where floor space is at a premium. You can also find low profile cabin beds which make it easy for those with mobility issues to use.
People with severe arthritis or knee injuries may find the lower drawers of cabin beds difficult to use due to the stooping and bending required. If purchasing this design for a child, please make sure that he or she can easily exit the ladder in case of an emergency. Some child-themed cabin beds have a built-in slide for easier exit.
Buying Tips
Before selecting your bed, be sure to measure the bedroom where it will be used, in order to choose the best size. Also, calcaulate how much storage space you require, since there are various amounts of drawers that are available in different sizes. Always measure the square footage of the bedroom and make sure that there is enough room around the drawer areas to fully extend each drawer.
Be prepared to pay between $400-1,500 for a quality design, depending on the type of material and size. Twin and full-sized beds are best for children, while most adults need the larger sleeping area of a queen or king. In addition, compare several quality cabin beds online, before you make your final choice to insure your ultimate satisfaction.
