Important Captains Bed Buying Tips
Know the facts and discover your furniture needs before purchasing the best captains bed for your needs.
A captains bed is a design that can be found among many manufacturers, but keep in mind that all captains beds are not equal. So, it's important to know a few things about this particular type of bed and what to look for if you are interested in purchasing one.
The basic feature that sets a captains bed apart from all others is the drawer space that is built right underneath the mattress area which offers various amounts of storage. The amount of drawers can vary depending on size, style and design.
Here are few things to remember when searching for the right captains bed that will meet your needs.
Know the Size You Prefer
Be sure to consider the size of bed you need for the particular room in which you plan on placing it. The various sizes range from twin, full, queen, and king size.
Since a captain's bed offers a veritable set of dressers beneath the sleep space, you really won't need an extra dresser or chest in a room so these units can fit in a smaller bedroom. Just make sure that you have room enough on all sides to fully extend the underbed drawers.
- Twin Extra Long size: 39" W × 80" L
- Queen size: 60" W x 80" L
- California King size: 72" W × 84" L

Select the Right Design
Designs
There are any number of designs that are
availablethat include captains beds with
simple headboards, bookcase headboards,
and no headboards.
Some come with an optional headboard and
footboard as well or with just the captains
bed frame so that you can attach your own
headboard to it.
Home Decor Styles
You can also choose just about any style and
type of wood that is available in other types of
sleep units.
Styles such as contemporary, mission, nautical,
cottage, traditional and rustic are some of the
most commonly purchased.
Optional Materials
Adults tend to prefer oak, walnut and cherry
finishes while children or youth enjoy pine,
maple or a unit that is painted white or black.
High End Beds vs. Cheap Captains Beds
Cheaper frames are manufactured with a combination MDF and pine or hardwood while more high end units are solid wood and veneer.
Choices of Storage Configuration
You can choose a bed with a minimal amount of drawers or the maximum amount in the largest captains bed available. If you need to push the sleep frame against a wall with only one side of drawers, then you can select 3 or 6 drawers on one side.
Keep in mind that storage systems are made either in one or two layers for an underbed dresser unit. On the other hand, you can select a king or queen bed for maximum storage that offers 12 drawers all around, 2 drawers at the foot and 2 small drawers in a bookcase headboard for the sum total of 16!
For a lower profile frame, only choose a 3 or 6 layer system. If you want a higher frame, the 6 or 12 layer unit will give you everything you can find in a captain's bed.
Compare for Best Selection
Before choosing your perfect sleep unit, be sure to know your bedroom dimensions as well as the complete length and width of the sleep frame you are interested in, including headboard and footboard. Also, be aware that you may need to select captains bed bedding accessories in order to make your bed more comfortable and practical. Compare prices, designs, storage options, warranties, return policies and quality before selecting your new captains bed.
